Story: Times&Transcript FOUR FALLS - Margo McLeod is only 26-years-old, but she'll serve as the sage mentor for New Brunswick's women's amateur golf team at the Canadian championship later this month in British Columbia. However, McLeod doesn't believe she'll have to give much advice to her teammates. McLeod, a chartered accountant from Woodstock, won the Royale New Brunswick women's amateur championship at the Aroostook Valley Golf Club here yesterday and she'll be joined on the provincial team by 16-year-old Alexandra LeBlanc of Country Meadows in Moncton and 17-year-old Morgan Matchett of Miramichi. "I feel a little old when I look at the rest of the team, but these girls played well and they earned their spots on the team," McLeod said. "They were steady and consistent," she said. "This is not uncommon at the national level. A lot of the provincial teams have very young players. "It's great for the future of women's golf in New Brunswick when we have these strong, young players coming on the scene." McLeod carded a 78 yesterday to combine with a pair of 77s to finish the 54-hole championship with a 16-over par 232 total. McLeod had a 43 on the front nine yesterday before settling herself down and firing a 35 coming home for her 78. "A few unfortunate drives got away from me on the front nine then was I able to keep in the fairway on the ninth hole, two-putt and get a par," she said. "I knew I was either ahead or tied with (LeBlanc) at that point so I just got myself to take my pars and play steady golf the rest of the way." LeBlanc placed second with a 239 total on rounds of 79-80-80. Matchett was third with rounds of 80-82-78 for a 240 total. McLeod, an accountant with Franchise Management Inc. in Woodstock, played three seasons at Alcorn State University in Mississippi in the mid-2000s. She also finished second at the last two amateurs and she's been a member of the provincial team six times. "It feels good to win this one after almost getting there in the past," she said. "There's nothing like winning it." The top three players will compete at the Canadian championship July 18-22 in Duncan, B.C. Katherine Ann Beamish of The Riverside Club in Rothesay and clubmate Jennifer Whalen shared fourth place with 249 totals. Beamish had rounds of 82-81-86 while Whalen was 78-86-85. Rounding out the top 10 were: Marie-France Finn of Memramcook (251), Jennifer Armstrong of Riverside (252), Bobbi Wilson of The Gage in Oromocto (253), Allison Chisholm of Riverside (255) and Sandy Comeau of Country Meadows (257).
